The synergism in bimetallic catalysts and the effects of catalytic additives are investigated from active site indentification, active site characterization, and surface thermodynamics points of view. Special applications include heterogeneous photocatalysis in waste water purification and emissions control catalysis for cleaning industrial and automative exhaust gases. In situ and ex situ techniques are employed for active site characterization by spectroscopic techniques such as NMR, IR and ESCA. Surface thermodynamics are studied via classical and statistical methods in conjuction with thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS).
